Lake Mead, Rising, Rising, & Still Rising!

Lake Mead, Nevada is still rising and the forecast is that it will keep on rising through the end of the year, Even better, experts are expecting another 15-20 feet rise by next season. (saweeeeet!)

"Everybody's really excited" said one enthusiastic Callville Bay regular. "They're trying to make room for next year's water runoff from Powell."

It all depends how much snow falls in the watershed this winter, but it looks like a good bet that Lake Mead will keep rising for the foreseeable future.

"The Views Were Amazing!"

George's Journal Entries, October 2011:

~ We drove up to Lake Powell from Anthem (Arizona) today. Took us five hours to get there and the scenery on the way up was amazing. Driving up at the end of the day created an unintended bonus as the shadows on the rocks seemed to make the desert colors more vivid than ever.

~ Arrival at the marina was fun. It was already dark. The stars seemed to hang just over our heads. The cart driver came right to our car and we loaded our gear and then headed down the ramp to the houseboat. He took us right to the houseboat and even helped us unload our stuff. He showed us how to call on the radio when we were ready to head back up.

~ Picked which rooms we wanted on the boat, unpacked our bags, and then called for our ride back to the car. Then we headed out to town to get supplies. We stopped at the grocery store with our list in hand, and had a ball roaming the aisles. Slice and bake chocolate chip cookie dough too!

Took this picture from the top of our houseboat.

~ Next, we were off to the airport to pick up our friends. Their flight arrived at 8:30 and we were early. The airport was locked up so we waited at the chain link fence, peering into the night sky for the flight. The airport beacon kept spinning around silently over our heads. It gave us an eerie feeling. All of a sudden the plane was there in the sky. It landed in what seemed like a second later, and then the airport came to life. Our friends were out in minutes and twenty minutes after that we were back at the boat.

~ Fresh baked cookies were in order and then we all headed to bed.

~ Next morning we were up bright and early, were briefed on the houseboat, and then "piloted" out into the lake. Rusty, our pilot, took us to a beach nearby and helped us get set.

~ Took the speed boat with our guide Steve out into the lake. The boat was fast and we made good time. We headed up to Rainbow Bridge and took the short hike to see it up close.

~ Lunch was on the boat with sandwiches. We just brought all of the fixings and made them right there on the boat. Steve took us to a shady cove. Magical moments.

~ Saw some big horn sheep on the way back grazing on the shore. Took the boat real close to shore and a couple of us got off and snuck as close as we could get for pictures. The views were amazing today.

~ Grilled steaks and baked potatoes. Never tasted so good. We ate on the top deck and watched the sun set.

~ Plugged our camera into the TV and shared our pictures of the day. The hot tub was great after that. Can't get over the stars out here.

~ Up late in the morning, went out on the kayaks and checked out the shore. It's so quiet out here. Birds flying overhead seemed to be watching us.

~ Left the beach at noon and headed to the marina. Lunch on the top deck while we were underway. Took turns "driving" the boat. Like the "steering wheel" on the top deck.

~ Radio call to the marina and the pilot came right out and took us in the last bit. What fun. Glad they do the parking.

~ Rented a couple of PWCs for the afternoon and took a fast ride to Antelope Canyon which is real close to the marina. Magical! Then went to see the dam and then decided to go through Antelope Canyon again.

~ Burgers on the grill for our last night. Fun meeting the people on the boat next to us. Swapped stories. Shared beverages. Off to sleep early because of a painfully early morning flight.

~ Sad to leave today. Made the last radio call for the cart service. Loaded up before the sun came up and headed for the airport and then the drive home.

~ Memories.

Grilled Chicken
With A View

Grill up a delicious healthy dinner without a lot of fuss and enjoy the view while you're at it.

Just bring along some pre-cut chicken breasts and a bottle of marinade. (Tomato-garlic flavor works well.) Use a couple of the bowls on the houseboat and coat the chicken with the marinade and cover them up. Put it all back in the refrigerator and go out and have a great day on the lake.

When you come back, take the bowls right out to the grill and put the chicken on. Pour the extra marinade on top of the breasts if you like a lot of flavor.

Grill 'em till they're cooked and enjoy the view (and a beverage) while you're at it.

Throw in a salad and some rolls and you're ready to go!

(Ok, so it's not "gourmet" but it sure is easy. Hide the bottle of marinade if you need to.)

Bachelor Style Salad

Seriously, if you don't want to mess with salad preparations either but it's your night to cook, try a pre-bagged mix. (Get the one with the dressing and croutons included.) Add a container of grape tomatoes and you should be good to go. (gasp)

Portside Musing

A certain donut company's tagline says that America runs on them, which is partly true;
I, however, run on my treadmill now due to them.
