Are you up for a houseboat adventure? If so, then go scuba diving during your next houseboat vacation! At Forever Houseboats, we have always known Lake Mead as one of the best houseboat lakes in the Southwest and an ideal place for scuba diving. From gypsum reefs to a submerged B-29 bomber, there is so much waiting to be explored beneath the pristine, glassy surface of Lake Mead.
Know Before You Go
Since Lake Mead is a reservoir, the water level fluctuates regularly. As the water empties and fills, the conditions of dive sites are affected. Be aware that although scuba diving is available at Lake Mead year-round, diving during the hot summer months has its challenges. Unfortunately, warmer temperatures contribute to algae growth, which lessens visibility. October through April, the temperatures make it more comfortable to dive and there is improved visibility during the dive.
Best Geographic Dive at Lake Mead
Thanks to the distinct geography of Lake Mead, there are quite a few unique dives at this lake in the middle of the Mohave Desert. At the Gypsum Reefs-Virgin Basin dive site, divers can explore a large, white gypsum reef area. The stunning gypsum crystal overhangs are extraordinary. While exploring, be aware that erosion may have caused some of these overhangs to become unstable.
Best Wreck Dive at Lake Mead
Without a doubt, the B-29 Superfortress Bomber submerged in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead is the most popular wreck dive in the lake. Discovered by divers in 2001, the bomber crashed into Lake Mead on July 21, 1948. Beginning in 2007, the National Park Service partnered with a professional service to offer guided dives in an effort to make this amazing dive accessible for visitors, while preserving the crash site.
