Nevada’s Lake Mead was once a booming mining town. Early Native Americans first mined salt in the Echo Bay basin that now sits submerged under the lake’s more than 26 million acre-feet of water. As claim jumpers headed West in search of gold and other precious metals, small mining towns sprung up.

If you’re planning on spending Labor Day at the lake, you’re not alone. Last year, 37% of Americans traveled for the 3-day weekend – about ten percent more than in 2015. The increase in holiday traffic led to booked hotels and crowded tourist attractions.

Lake Powell is one of the most impressive sights in the Southwest. Nestled on the Arizona-Utah border, the lake has over 250 square miles of surface area – making it the country’s second-largest manmade lake. It’s a huge recreation and tourism spot, attracting around 2 million visitors each year.
